The 2005-2006 Players
Being selected to participate in the Whitney Young basketball program is a great honor and a huge opportunity, however being on the basketball team requires a lot of work because of the high level of demands placed upon every player.
Players practice six days a week, averaging 3 or more hours per practice. The players are expected to show up to practice punctually, and be a good teammate, understanding their role and always do what is asked of them by the coaching staff.
Some of the players who were initially selected to play on the team left due to academic ineligibility and others because they could not keep up with the demands and challenges of balancing academics and sports.

I’ve been playing organized sports since the third grade. I have played as a lineman in football, a pitcher in baseball.
I began playing organized basketball in a league, when I was in fourth grade and since then I have played with numerous teams: The Chicago Heights Hawks, The Blue Island Rockets, The Illinois Hoopaz, The Rising Stars, and last year with Ferrari.
In 2002 and 2003 attended the Five-Star Basketball Camp. In 2004, attended the Blue Chip basketball camp in Kentucky. Also, in 2004 went to the first Jr. Phenom Camp in San Diego, California.
I’ve gone many places, but I have many more to go.

Born on August 29, 1991. I play basketball in a league at my neighborhood park and also attend a basketball camp during the summer. I always try my hardest when I am playing and got a break allowing me to play for the Whitney Young High School team this year. I plan to work hard to again have that opportunity next year also.
I did not initially make the Whitney Young Basketball team. I did not give up but decided instead to become the Team Manager which allowed me to practice with the team and learn from the coaches. I knew that this would make me a better player. I got my break to be placed on the team after a couple of players were not able to stay on after their first semester of school.
My favorite NBA player is Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat and my favorite team is the Detroit Pistons who are having a great season. In my spare time, I really like to play basketball.

Born October 31, 1990. My mother, Donna Spencer has always wanted an academic future for me, but I have always wanted an athletic future. I’ve played competitive sports ever since I was 3. I’ve excelled at baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, and football, with my favorite sports being football and basketball.
I played football at Amundsen Park since the fourth grade. My team was the Windy City Dolphins. As quarterback and free-safety, I led my team to 64 consecutive victories, 4 championships, and one national championship victory. I am very proud of my career statistics; 3,273 yards of total offense, 26 touchdown passes, and 79 rushing touchdowns and never fumbled.
I would like to someday attend Georgia University or Miami University. All of my success in sports and academics has come from the encouragement and support of my mother, Donna Spencer.

I am a hard-worker both in school and in athletics. My plan for a successful future includes playing baseball in the MLB. I am working hard to have the opportunity to attend a Division I college with a longer term interest in a career or profession in some area of law enforcement.
Pedro Rosa has been a standout baseball player since playing for Hamlin Park. For the last three years he has played for the number two ranked tournament baseball team in Illinois - the Arlington Longshots, who are a well coached consistent perennial tournament winning team. Rosa has played over 120 baseball games a season since age 10.
Will be a freshman playing on the WYHS Varsity baseball team.

Joins Whitney Young from St. Hilarys elementary where he averaged 25 points per game. Excellent ball handling skills with a very quick first step; Slashes to the basket and has a smooth jump shot. Currently averages 18 points a game.
During the summer of 2005 started for an AAU team called Top Flight. The team was successful winning Super Regionals, earning a trip to Nationals in Florida. The team didn’t make it out of the pool because of a three way tie for first which was decided by points.
